To gain short-term relief of overwhelming feelings so that an individual can move toward authentic empowerment and resolution of issues.

Healthy Venting Process

1. Don’t name names or specifics

“A situation came up…Do you have time to listen?”

 

2.  Share your doubts, feelings, fears and weaknesses

“I’m unsure…I feel angry (hurt, etc.)…I’m afraid I’ll…”

 

3. Describe your highest vision of a positive outcome

“At the end of this, I am picturing…”

 

4. Clarify and state your plan in simple steps

“I’m going to …”

 

5. Role-play and brainstorm

“Can I practice with you?”

 

6. Do something to lift your mood when you finish

“Thank you, I’m going to…”
